Things To Do In The Winter With Kids
Tiffany Larsen| 07 Oct, 2021
Let it snow! We’re ready for winter, are you?
There are so many fun activities to do once the snow hits the ground, however, during the wintertime you may be more susceptible to developing a case of the common couch potato.
But don’t worry! We’ve prescribed a list of winter activities for kids to get them off the screens and out into the snow!
Winter Facts For Kids
Why do leaves change colors? Where does snow come from? Why can’t it be summer all year long? These are all valid questions that you might find your little ones asking, and helping them understand why the seasons change will help keep their curiosity growing.
How do you explain when the seasons change?
Great question! Seasons change because of the Earth’s rotation around the sun. It takes a year to complete its orbit and as it does so, the distribution of sunlight hitting the planet’s surface slowly changes. After all, our planet is slightly tilted, affecting the temperature and weather we experience down here on Earth. As a result, the seasons change relative to where you are in the world. Cool stuff, huh?
How do you explain winter to a child?
So why are there different seasons at specific times of the year? Because of Earth’s tilted axis, the hemispheres will get different amounts of sunlight at each point in the year.
The hemisphere tilted towards the sun gets more heat, giving us summer, and the other hemisphere tilted away from the sun will get less heat, making it cooler to allow snow to fall and winter to come!
Kids Winter Clothes
Making sure your kiddos are bundled up with some warm winter wear is one of the most important things of the season - check out some of our ideas below!
When should I buy my kid’s winter clothes?
Now is never too early. Once the end of summer rolls around, the cooler weather will be here before you know it! Stock up before things run out.
If you want to save a few bucks, buying jackets and coats around late December to early January is a great idea. You’ll get all the after-Christmas sales when stores are getting rid of their stock and ready for spring.
What kid’s winter clothes should I buy?
For all the time kids spend outside, you’ll definitely want to invest in some quality outerwear. This includes down jackets, snow boots, snow pants, hats, gloves, scarves, mittens, and so on!
Among all the gear, you may need to stock up on their back to school look! Check out Sparkle in Pink’s jacket and vest collection for affordable options made adorable.
Winter Activities For Kids
No more sidewalk chalk and slip-n-slides -- we’re grabbing our snow pants and sleds, and hitting the hills for some winter fun!
Winter activities during COVID?
Jack Frost never kept us away from some classic winter fun! Ice skating, sledding, snow tubing, visiting ice castles, and building your own Frosty are all great options for enjoying the winter season outside, even in COVID.
When the cold gets to be too much, warm up by putting together a hot chocolate bar and curling up in front of the fireplace to watch a winter-themed movie! Anything snow-themed will do!
Winter crafts for kids?
Still hunting for some indoor activities? Try hosting a crafting party! Arts and crafts can be a great way for kids to express their creativity during the chilly months and lucky for you, we’ve got some ideas up our sleeves:
- Gingerbread House: When the holidays roll around, make sure you feed their imagination (and sweet tooth!) by decorating gingerbread houses. Things may get messy, but that's just part of the creative process, right?
- 3D Paper Snowflakes: Carving snowflakes from paper is arguably the most popular winter craft of choice. The delicate blue and white decorations hanging from the ceiling are a classic winter craft you’ve got to try at least once a year!
- Egg Carton Penguins: You can’t get much cuter than this. Egg carton penguins are quick and easy, and you’re sure to end up with some adorable winter decor! Plus, you may even find most of the supplies already in your home!
Kids Winter Activity Outfits and Wear
Need some outfit inspo? We’ve got you covered! Check out some of our favorite fall and winter transitional pieces:
Nothing screams cozy like a pullover sherpa. We’re loving this burgundy and cheetah color block design so much, we made one for you and your little one! It's fuzzy and fabulous, and is sure to keep you toasty warm out in the snow or sitting by the fire!
Sweater weather isn’t just for fall. Carry over the adorableness from season to season with this versatile knit pom pom sweater! Pick one up in your color of choice and she’ll be set all winter long!
Stay in and cuddle with a trendy tie dye hoodie! Complete with a sunflower ‘Wild Child” design, she’ll be dreaming of spring in no time. It's a great way to bring some cheeriness into the winter season and she’ll get great use out of it all year round!
You can’t get much cuter (or classier) than this. We’re digging the balloon sleeves and high-waisted denim pants for that bold, feminine feel. Your little one will be ready to take on the school year in an empowering outfit she’ll feel great in.
Cutie alert! This adorable set comes with a soft, long sleeve top and matching jeans. It's got a flattering fit, complete with ruffled bell sleeves and sunflower pocket - can you see the sunflowers peeking out from behind the distressed denim? This unique set is the perfect go-to outfit for her to rock all day, any day.
Sherpa is everywhere this year, and we’re hopping on the teddy bear trend! Get cozy this winter season with a sherpa teddy vest. It’s made with ultra soft material and the tan color makes for a classic winter staple!
