Fun Olympic Ideas for Kids
Tiffany Larsen| 25 Jun, 2021
In honor of the summer Olympics season it’s time to start planning the next backyard olympic games for the whole family! Get out your gold medals, battle faces, and be ready for a crazy day of fun with your kids. Don’t know where to start? Keep reading for our favorite family olympic ideas this summer.
How did the Olympics start?
The Olympics started over 2700 years ago in Ancient Greece and were held as a sacred truce for people from all over the neighboring lands to compete in various sporting events. Today, the Olympics are held every four years, honoring the sacred tradition of the ancient Olympians. Professional athletes gather from all over the world to compete in the games, and the modern Olympics are an event of true global unity.
What sports are in the 2021 Olympics?
A wide variety of sports will be held at the 2021 Summer Olympics in Japan, including some new ones! Team events such as football, baseball, basketball, softball, sailing, surfing, and cycling will be held outside of Tokyo.
The traditional summer events like synchronized swimming, diving, swimming, water polo, and open water swimming will be held throughout the Games. Keep an eye out for archery, track and field, badminton, and gymnastics. There’s even Olympic kayaking and canoeing!
How to cheer on our American Olympians
Athletes who qualify for the Olympics have the honor of representing their country and making their citizens proud. There are ways you can directly show your support to Team USA through donations and letters.
If you don’t have the means to donate, supporting the team by tuning in television and social media is just as great! Hold Olympic Games viewing parties for your friends and family, or host your own summer olympic games right in the backyard.
Things to wear for your Olympic Games watch party and Kids Olympics
Olympic Games watch parties are the best way to show off your American pride and support the athletes! Get dressed up in your best USA gear and add on some face paint for an extra flare. Need some outfit ideas for your little one? Here are our favorite USA kids outfit ideas at Sparkle in Pink:
How to Host Your Own Kids Olympics: 6 Easy Steps
‘Tis the season for the long-awaited backyard olympic games. Can someone start a drum roll please? In six easy steps you can turn your backyard into the next Olympic ring (maybe without the giant torch!).
1. Pick your sports
Some favorites include:
- Basketball
- Table Tennis
- Triathlon
Some less conventional options:
- Water-balloon toss
- Over-and-under race with a wet sponge
- Blow out a candle with a water-gun competition
- Egg on a spoon/Egg toss
- Three-legged race
- Cornhole
- Frisbee golf
- Eating contests
- Flip cup
2. Create the medals
Use some cardboard, ribbon, and glitter glue to create some quick and flashy medals for the winners!
3. Create your country flags
The flags are the best part of any backyard olympic games! Use paper or fabric and some markers to create each participant’s flag. Have your little ones make up their own country or choose one of their favorite places to visit!
4. Hold your opening ceremony
Belt your national anthems, wave your flags, and give a good round of high fives to all participants. The opening ceremony is the perfect time to show off your nation’s colors.
5. Play ball!
Let the games begin! Get ready to rumble with all of your favorite backyard games you picked out.
6. Hold your closing ceremony!
There are winners, there are losers, and there are those that would rather sit and eat watermelon and spectate. Whatever the outcome was, everyone will have had a blast!
