Packing for the First Day

First day jitters is a real thing — we know all about it. We want to make sure your little one is ready for all that awaits them this semester, which is why we’ve put together this packing list for that first day of school.

Backpacks

Backpacks are a big part of a student’s educational process. They’ll use it for years and it becomes their “partner in crime” throughout the hallways. When picking a backpack, make sure you’re picking one with plenty of pockets, one that fits them well and comfortably and one that they like the design of. They’ll be wearing it all throughout the year, so make sure it’s something that they are proud of!

School supplies

School supplies vary for each grade level and each school. You can usually find good school supply items either at the department store, online or at your school’s open house, but in general, here are a few good things to always be sure your little one is stocked up on:

  • Notebooks
  • Pencils
  • Black or blue pen
  • Red pen
  • Textbook covers
  • Pencil sharpener or extra lead (for mechanical pencils)
  • Calculator
  • Highlighter

Picking your outfits

Picking outfits for back to school season can seem like a more daunting task than it actually is. Some parents think that the new season requires an entirely new wardrobe, but that isn’t the case. All you really need to do is pick out a few new outfits that will have your kids excited for the upcoming school year.

Once you’ve purchased some new outfits, let your child pick out what they would like to wear for the first week or so. This will make them happier with their outfits and will help them to conceptualize the different days that they’ll be in school. It’s a small thing, but it can go a long way towards the confidence and enthusiasm of a child who is entering the school setting.

Lunches!

Don’t forget about lunch! Learning all day can work up an appetite, so make sure that you have prepared some solid lunches for your little ones. A main course item like a sandwich or a Lunchable is always a hit. Once that’s decided, then you’ll want to throw in a fruit or vegetable (or both!) so that they are getting their nutrients. Top it off with a drink (water, juice, milk, etc.) and something sweet for dessert and they’ll be good to go!

Traveling to and from school

When people are thinking of back to school tips, it can be easy for them to forget about what they’ll be doing before and after the bell rings. Here are a few things worth keeping in mind!

Devices

It’s no secret that the must-have toys for children these days often come in the form of an electronic device. Whether it’s a phone, gaming system or tablet, children are naturally drawn to these devices, which can be a problem in a school setting.

Look into your school and see what their policy is on devices. Some schools let students have devices on them so that they can use them before or after school, some schools make you keep the devices in a locker or cubby and some schools ban devices completely. Do your due diligence so you can see what your child is allowed to bring to school and then make sure they understand the rules as well.

After school care

Have you and your children discussed a plan of action for when the school day ends? This may be one of the most important things that you discuss with them, because those first few days can be overwhelming for a child. Once the bell rings, there’s a lot of commotion, and if your child doesn’t know what to do, it can be frightening for them.

Sit down with them days in advance and tell them what they’ll be doing once the bell rings. It’s even helpful to go to the school and do a practice run of what they should do at the end of the day. It’s also helpful to write down your phone number and give it to them so they can put it in their backpack in case of any emergency where they would need to contact you.

What to look for in Kids School Outfits

The first thing you’ll want to take into account when shopping for kids’ clothing is to find something comfortable. Children naturally struggle with sitting still, so getting them something comfortable will make things easier on them and their teacher. You also don’t want to purchase anything that may be too complicated for them to use, such as a belt or a plethora of accessories.

Secondly, you’ll want to be conscious of your budget. Unlike when you purchase clothes for yourself, there isn’t a lot of longevity in kids clothing. They’ll likely grow out of each outfit within a year or two, which is why you don’t necessarily want to break the bank trying to purchase an outfit for them. As they get older and grow less, this is when you want to pay more for clothing that will last on them and fit them for a few years.
