Hello, all! We've have all been gearing up for the holidays over here. It's been such a busy last few months, which I'm sure you all can relate to. We have such amazing things in store for Christmas and New Years, which we will get to soon. But we can't skip over Thanksgiving! This is such a fun time of year and here in Utah, we try to hold on to the gorgeous fall weather as long as we can.🍁
For today's blog, I thought of what everyone loves and also stresses over.... The FOOD! I figured I'd whip up a few of my favorites to show you that are delicious and SO SO simple anyone can do them!
I have the easiest appetizer; only 3 ingredients that you put on a platter. That's it. See? Easy! And I know not everyone loves pumpkin or apple pie so I wanted to switch it up a bit. I am sharing a chocolate moose pie that the only baking you need to do, is bake the crust. No taking up any oven time from the big ol' turkey. And for a new found favorite... a cranberry cream cheese pastry that is probably one of the best things I've eaten in a long time. It's sweet, but not too sweet that it could be served as a breakfast or at the end of a yummy turkey dinner for all those non-pie lovers. And of course, we can't do a blog without some sort of craft idea. All the SIP kiddos LOVE crafts. So we're always on the hunt for some fun, new ideas and love to share what we've got. Paint on hands and feet? What kid wouldn't want to do that? It's all coming to you below!
First up, appetizer. No matter if you're hosting the Thanksgiving get together or being a guest, it's always nice to have some starters for everyone to enjoy before the festivities begin. This can't even be called a recipe for how simple it is, which is why I love it. This is what you'll need:
That's it! A block of cream cheese, pepper jelly, and some crackers, all served on a simple platter. And I promise, everyone will love it. The pepper jelly from Trader Joe's is my personal favorite but any kind you can find in the grocery store would be yummy. It's sweet and has a little hint of heat but nothing even kids can't handle.
Now for the desserts! I'll start with the chocolate moose pie. I love chocolate, we should all know that by now. Haha so of course this is a must for our pie spread! Here's what you'll need:
Store bought pie crust (you can make your own, but we're going for simple here!)
12 ounces semisweet chocolate chips
Pinch of salt
1 Teaspoon Vanilla
1 Large tub of cool whip (Again, simplicity!)
1/4 Cup Sugar
Chocolate shavings or crushed Oreo's (optional)
You'll want to start by baking the pie crust in a 400 oven for 9-11 minutes until golden. Let cool completely.
In the meantime, melt chocolate with vanilla, salt, and 1 cup of whipped cream. I microwave mine for 1 minute, then 30 second increments until melted. Stir until smooth, transfer to a large mixing bowl, then let cool to room temp. Once chilled, fold the whipped cream into the chocolate. You'll want to do this gently so it stays light and airy. Pour moose into cooled pie crust, then top with topping of your choice. (I use crushed Oreo's). Set in fridge until set, about 6 hours. This can be prepared a day ahead too which is a total win on Thanksgiving! Yum!!😋
And now for this gem! Here's what you'll need:
1/2 Cup Orange Juice
1/4 Cup Craisins
4oz. Cream Cheese
1/4 Cup Sugar
2 Tsp. Vanilla
1 Sheet Puff Pastry Dough
1 Egg scrambled with 1 Tablespoon Water
Start by microwaving the orange juice in a bowl for 10 seconds. Add cranberries and let sit for 10 minutes.
Mix cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla in a bowl until smooth.
Lay puff pastry on baking sheet, smear cream cheese mixture on middle section of the dough. You'll want to add a good amount because this will puff up. Then with a spoon, drain out cranberries and sprinkle the on top of the cream cheese. (Keep the infused OJ for the final step.) Cut diagonal lines on the sides of the dough, then just fold alternating the sides so it becomes a little package like so.
Brush the entire thing with the egg wash. Top with sliced almonds. Bake at 375 for 25 minutes. Then with the remaining cream cheese mixture, add about a teaspoon or two of orange juice until the cream cheese becomes thin enough to drizzle on top for some extra icing.
I'll be honest, this did not last long once it came out of the oven. It is seriously so good! Enjoy!!!
Now for all our little crafters! This was a fun one. They got to put paint on their hands and feet to make little turkeys! Super cute!!🎨
Here's what I grabbed from Michael's:
White poster paper, construction paper, and fall paint colors. Super inexpensive!
Put the paint on paper plates or newspaper. Dip the feet in the brown and help them keep their little toes up because you'll want those to be a different color since they're going to be the turkey feet! Then for the feathers, I just let them go crazy. They did multiple hand prints in different directions. Once dried, let them cut around the foot and hands. Glue the body of the turkey upside down on the hand prints so the toes are pointing down for the feet. Then they can just cut a beak, the neck, and eyeball!
Those are some fun turkeys and a cute craft you can keep to always remember their little footprints! Or in my Jordyn's case, big footprint.😂
