Parades, bbq’s, carnivals, fireworks, and FOOD!! Don’t you guys just love the 4th of July?! It’s totally my favorite holiday. I love summertime and being outside with my girls and I even love my kids being out of school (most of the time 😉). I’m kind of known in my family for my desserts. I have LOTS of yummy things up my sleeve but that being said, I have four kids including baby twins. I don’t really have time or energy to slave away over a stove or do something that is super time consuming, especially in the summer. So for about five years straight now I’ve made the same two things for our family party. They’re so simple, super cheap to make, and yummy! Everyone knows what’s coming since I do it the same every year, but no one complains because they’re good, refreshing and festive.
Now remember, I have little “helpers” that are right by my side when I’m making anything sweet so it’s not the most professional looking but, if your kids are helping and the things you’re making are looking all perfect then you don’t need blog tips because that means you’re an alien of some sort. 😆 Just kidding. But in all honesty, these are so simple, easy on the wallet and it’s fun to let your kids get creative in the kitchen and make messes..... I mean memories! Haha
The two things I always make are a Red, White, Blue pudding cake and chocolate covered pretzels! (Or Oreos, or wafers or anything that you want to be covered in chocolate!) That’s it! It’s so simple and they’re easy to transport which is always a plus for holidays. Here’s what you’ll need along with very difficult and contrast instructions. (Not. I’m all about eyeballing when it comes to recipes so don’t expect in depth instructions unless I’m baking.)
Here’s your list for the cake:
Pre-made angel food cake
2 Large tubs of Cool Whip
1 Large packet of instant vanilla pudding
Prepare your pudding according to the instructions
on the box. Let set up. Cut the cake into bite size
cubes and lay in the bottom of a 9x13 baking dish.
When your pudding is set, pour it all over the cake
cubes. I don’t stir it in, I just let the cake absorb it.
Then do a thick layer of Cool Whip being gentle
with your spatula so you don’t mix layers. Then
you make your flag design on top with the fruit.
I try to use similar shaped strawberries so it looks
And the chocolate covered pretzels are so dang easy, I wouldn't even consider this a recipe. Haha.
Here's the list for those:
White chocolate melting chips (The ones I like to use are the Ghirardelli White Chocolate Melting Wafers)
Put your chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl
and microwave in 30 second increments until
chocolate is almost all melted. Remove and stir
until melted. This avoids burning your chocolate.
Then dip your pretzels in the white chocolate
leaving a little bit of the pretzel exposed. Lay flat
on a baking sheet lined with wax paper or foil
with at least 1 inch in between pretzels. Let set
in fridge for at least 15 minutes. Then separate
the remaining chocolate and dye each one with
your food coloring and stir. With a spoon held high
just go back and forth really quickly over the
pretzels and it will give it the fun, whimsical lines.
Then just let them set in the fridge until set.
These are so simple and yummy holiday treats that everyone is sure to love. I hope you all have an awesome and safe 4th Of July! And hopefully a yummy one as well. :)
